Cut-Up Cakes

The other day I was rummaging around and found
this wonderful little Cut-Up Cakes instruction booklet.

These animal cakes, featuring Baker's coconut,
were so cute I had to scan a few of them for you.

I made similar cakes for my kids when they were itty bitty.
Kitty-cats, bunny-rabbits, bears, clowns...
Those days were so much fun!
Sigh... sometimes I wish my son and daughter were little again.

(This little booklet was published by the General Foods Corp. in  1959.)

I knew I had some other cut-up cake instructions
clipped from magazines years ago,
So I hunted through my recipe file and found these two:
The teddy bear was one of my favorites to make!
And you all know that I love daisies!

(The bear cake came from Better Homes And Gardens, Dec 1968.
The daisy cake came from Family Circle, April 1971.)

Be sure to let me know if you make a cut-up cake for your family,
and I'll post a link here.

  1. Oh how cute. Takes me back. I think simple home made is best. I go to some birthday parties and these kids are practically getting a wedding cake. Can you imagine the cost. I love the butterfly one. Hmm. Maybe for a birthday for my youngest next year. Too cute.

  3. What a great collection of cut out cakes.I wanted a to make a fire engine cake for Fox but didn't know how. I guess there would be a way shown on the internet. WE asked a shop to do it for us but they declined because they were too busy making Mother's Day cakes that is why we ended up with an edible photo cake.

  10. Luckily, when you become a Grama you get to take another run at the little people again! I've had more fun playing now than I did the first time; the 'bonus round' you get your priorities in order and PLAY with kids and skip the laundry!

  11. I used to make a bowtie wearing bunny every Easter. He was made from 2 round cakes and decorated with coconut, jelly beans and licorice. (sp?)I probably still have the magazine page with the directions.
I love the penguin and the swan. Thanks for sharing the fun.

  17. I remember collecting recipes similar to these, too! I loved making cakes for my kids when they were little. I don't have little ones around to bake for anymore, but I still have a few of the ideas that I cut out of magazines. I used to clip recipes and decorating ideas like crazy when I was younger! :D
I think these would be so much cuter and way more economical today than the kind ordered at the bakery!
    Enjoy your Friday!

  21. I loved the teddy bear and the duck! The daisy is really pretty, too. I did spy the one cut up cake I made for our daughter one year for her birthday...the butterfly! Wilton has put out a similar booklet and I did the clown out of it for our son when he was young.

On a more recent note, I made a heart shaped cake for my hubby for Valentine's Day. I have a heart shaped cake pan, but I enjoyed the challenge of the cut-up cake. It was fun!

Thank you, Gayle, for sharing all of your cut up cakes pictures.
