Backwards

Ok, girls,
ALL of the hangers in my closet have been hung backwards.
I will turn them around as I wear each piece.
By December there will be no doubt about which clothes I have worn
and which clothes I haven't, and therefore don't need.
(I promise to donate all the unworn clothes to charity.)

I once heard someone say that we wear the same 40 pieces, over and over,
and everything else in our closet is just a waste of money and space.
It will be very interesting to see how it all turns out for me.

Whoever thought of this was a genius!
Easiest way to sort out a closet!
I can just sit here and let time do the work for me.
:-)

Anybody want to join me?

    1. I thought so, too. Wish I knew who thought of it to begin with.

  2. The clothes that I love, I wear to pieces! I will be curious to see how your plan works out. Will you be prompted to wear more clothes to turn around more hangers? It's a bit of a psychological test too! We donate to a few charities on a regular basis. My husband keeps filling up the house with more stuff though! :O

    1. For the most part I wear things because I like the way they l fit me and they suit the occasion. Or lack of one. So I really think this exercise in cleaning out a closet will work for me.

  3. I've done that and it is amazing. Of course, there are those "special" dressy things that you might not wear and those I don't get rid of (for I'll wear them next year perhaps) but everything else is "fair game"! I do that with DH's clothes as well. for he buys LOTS of clothes and wears the same TWENTY pieces over and over!

    1. I wish I could do this with my husbands things! He has more stuff in the closet than I do.

  4. After moving several times in the past few years, I have cut back on the amount of clothes in my closet! I do think this is a great idea. Keep us posted!
    Enjoy the weekend.

    1. It's been a long while since a move and probably 3 years since I've sorted the clothes. That being said, I have a normal closet, not some humongous walk-in thing. So the limited space keeps me from going overboard. Still, I've got it packed pretty tight and I know I can't realistically wear all the things that are in there in a years time.

  5. Thinking....thinking! I would really like to join you. Let me see what I can do. I know I probably wear about 10 tops over and over again. I'm going to look in my closet and see what it there. I also have one drawer of tees and one of long sleeves. I would need to count them, too. I LOVE this idea! I'll let you know if I think I can! I think it's brilliant, too! Hugs!

  6. This is the first time I've heard of this great way to let go! I went thru my closet before Christmas and donated a large bag of clothes. More to come with my de-cluttering before the wedding.

    1. Deb, I know you are hard at work, getting your home ready for coming wedding! Such an exciting and busy time for you.

  7. This is a wonderful idea! Without looking in my closet, I could probably list around 7-8 things that I will wear all the time. My "everyday" clothes are few, too. And why do I have so many shells (I think that is what they're still called) in my closet?? I'm guilty of wearing what I love or is comfortable over and over again.
Have a nice weekend! I hope it doesn't get too crazy weather-wise in MO!

    1. I am hoping that this exercise really shows me what I LOVE to wear. And then if I keep a few occasional pieces, I should be good to go.

  8. That is a great idea! I wear the same black pants week after week. I wonder what I'd find if I tried your trick?

  9. I sorted through my wardrobe and drawers last year when I decorated my room. Very hard. I still kept a few things that I like but will probably never wear again and of course the items that I'll lose weight and fit into again which is very unlikely to happen. I tend to wear my favourite pieces until they fall apart but try to reuse the material in craft projects or wear for decorating/gardening if they're suitable. Any decent stuff goes to the charity shop or textile bank. The idea with the hangers though is a great idea andI look forward to seeing the results!

  11. Brilliant idea. I really should do the same thing. I know there are clothes I haven't touched in years that just keep getting put back in the closet.

    1. Maybe the easiest way to complete a closet clean-out would just be to donate the back third of what's hanging in there.

  13. Neat idea! But i wouldn't want to know the answer here. I always think there will be a day I will want to wear it. Even if it doesn't fit. : (

    1. Will the things still be in style by the time they fit again? My experience has shown that the answer to that question (at least for me) that is a big ol' no! :-)

  14. Heard of people doing this, sorry, can't join in the fun! I'm a hoarder, I've got clothing collections, clothing from 15 years ago, clothing under the bed, on the shelf, in the closet, on am extta rack.. in a box downstairs.. wow.. problem.

I am interested in watching how it goes though!!

    1. Well, someday when you are ready to do a sort, you'll know how this experiment worked for me.

  15. That is a great idea. I'll try it. I usually feed the clothes in at the left hand side and take them from anywhere but whatever ends up at the right hand side is the stuff I don't wear. It gets tossed now and then.

  17. I usually do a thorough cleaning of my closet in the fall and spring. For some reason I couldn't get into it this fall. I'm now thinking this idea just might be the "kick in the pants" I am needing. Sounds like a great idea and easy too.
So glad you shared it :).

    1. We used to do an annual closet clean up every summer, when the kids were young. Because they were growing, we really needed to keep up with it to make sure they had clothes that fit properly. Now that they are grown up and don't need my help with that, I seem to have gotten off my regular clean out schedule. It's probably been 3 years since I've sorted the whole closet. Yes, I've pulled a couple of pieces out here and there, but still.... I know there is way more in that closet than I wear.

    1. Donna, that is the problem, isn't it? We're saving everything for that special "someday" when we have the right occasion, or "someday" when we lose 10 more pounds, or "someday" when it comes back in style, etc... It's time to let it go.

  26. I just recently went through the clothes in my dresser drawers and eliminated what didn't fit and what I wore infrequently. The closet is next...so I think I'll give your helpful hint a try!

    1. I am really looking forward to having a pared-down closet, filled only with things that I currently wear. Maybe there will actually be room to slide the hangers on the rod. LOL!
