Tiny Frocks

A few years ago I found several of these little crocheted cotton dresses at a vintage shop.  Aren't they just the prettiest little things?  I loved them!  They appealed to the paper doll collector in me, even though they were not made of paper.

There were several more dresses, in reds and yellows, that I shared with one of my sisters who loves those cheery shades on the warm side of the color wheel.  She used tiny clothes pins and hung them from a small clothesline on the wall of her laundry room.  And they look really cute that way!

I would like to do that, but I don't have a laundry "room".  My washer and dryer are down in the unfinished half of my basement.  Just cement walls.  I need help to figure out a way to display them someplace in my house.    You gals always amaze me with your creativity!  So... what would you do?

I think they were originally designed to be potholders for the kitchen, but they really are not thick enough to provide useful protection from heat.

I can't wait to hear your ideas!!!

  2. My grandmother crocheted little potholder/hot pads like these. Wonderful memory of visiting her in TX.

A shadow box would be a wonderful way to display them.

  3. Those are great!! I've always wanted to find some of those. There is a lady that makes them and her blog is laleescottage.blogspot.com
Maybe there are some ideas on what to do with them there? I had a bunch of crocheted potholders similar to those in construction, but they are round. Similar colors and material I guess. So pretty and you they took hours to make. Great find!

  4. These are too cute. I could see them framed individually with similar frames. The framed pieces could then be hung together as a group.
    Have a wonderful weekend.

  5. These are adorable!! I love your sister's idea but alas, I don't have a laundry room either...just a closet that the w/d fits into (and I am grateful for that, lol). Enjoy those cuties :)

    Blessings!

  6. What a wonderful find, I have seen them in red and white...but your other colors are great. I have them at my grandparents house on the fridge and sitting around. My neighboor collects them and has them lined about the cabinets in her kitchen.

  7. No laundry room for me either - just a closet in our bathroom that holds the stackable washer/dryer. Why not hang them in the kitchen - or on a line across a window?

  10. Oh my, Gayle! Those are absolutely beautiful! I always think of my grandma when I see something like that. She didn't do the dresses, but she did doily after doily after doily. I've never really worked with the cotton thread to crochet, but have always envied those who do because they turn out such awesome work! Maybe that could be my "learn something new" for winter, yes?

Have a wonderful weekend...and thanks for sharing your beautiful collection with us.

  11. Hi! Those are such darlin' little dresses. If you think you might ever have a granddaughter, you could hold on to them and create the clothesline idea for the nursery. Those would be just precious in a baby room ; )

  12. Those are so precious. Jane had a great idea about framing them, or perhaps creating a large bulletin board and "pinning" them to it like a gallery display. I agree that they are much to pretty to use as pot holders. I love your blog. I look forward to following you and getting to know you!

  15. I have a number of these languishing in a drawer. I think my grandmother made them. They'd be so cute in a shadow box or hanging from tiny hangers under a cupboard.

  16. Hang them on a line in the kitchen or laundry room - just to enjoy the look of them. So sweet!

  17. These are all so adorable. I have some red and green ones. I don't have a laundry room either.

  18. I think they would look really cute framed. If you don't have enough wall space to hang them all, you could just change them out every once in a while...

  19. How about as a "valance" in your kitchen???
    Way toooo cute.

  20. I adore those tiny frocks - I have a few - and I've seen patterns for some - but I like the vintage ones best. I've never seen some of the ones you show - they are all just darling. Mine are in a box - I should get them out and display them someplace too.

  21. I had so many in red years ago I made a valence for my kitchen window out of them...that was a great conversation piece.

  23. Oh how cute they are, and they look like they are in wonderful condition. I think the idea of framing them is great! If you ever have a baby shower for someone who is having a little girl, they would be so cute hung on a line or pinned to a tablecloth, or even stuck to a wreath on the door. Such a lucky find! So glad you shared them for Fav. Things Sat. laurie

  25. They are all adorable! I like the idea of framing them. They might also be wonderful appliques for quilt blocks.

Thank you for your congratulations and well wishes on our expected granddaughter!

  26. ...They are so amazingly cute they are almost graphic!//I would get three shadow type or lucite (plastic) boxes and rotate them as art!

  27. I LOVE these little dresses, and can't ever resist them myself either. I have no real laundry room either, they just get stacked with the other vintage crocheted potholders in my kitchen. Too cute!

  30. I have quite a few of these doily dresses........I pin them to the old table cloths I have on my fridge and freezer. The cloth hangs down the side and it's just right to 'pin' the dress on the table cloth! I have lots of other shapes I mix up with the dresses.

  31. Sorry about the double post.....you could tack them to a plain kitchen curtain....remove them before washing the curtain.

  32. Oh so cute!! I have seen doll dresses hung on a line and used as a window valance; maybe that would work in your sewing area? Wish I had patterns for these, not that I'm that great at crocheting ;) I love your collections!
