Do you know what this is?
A pie bird !
...Four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie.
Have you seen the latest edition of Country Living Magazine?
Mine arrived in my mailbox today.
It has an article about pie birds. (And pie-elephants, and pie-fruit, etc)
These fun little ceramic vents are used when baking pastry to let steam escape
and prevent the filling from bubbling out all over your oven.
These three warblers usually perch in my kitchen window.
1.Yellow beaked blackbird.
2. Hand painted with blue flowers, by someone with initials C.C.
3. Brown drip bird.
Some day I hope to collect a few more.
I've got my eye on a cute little blue one over at the antique store.
Oh, I remember these!!! Granny Walden used to use them bakin' pies in her old farm kitchen. These are great!!!
ReplyDeleteGod bless ya'll and enjoy this day! :o)
I have loved pie birds. I hope the blue one can come and live with you soon.
ReplyDeleteHi! they are the prettiest things ever, even I would bake if I had one of those!jennyx

P.S. I am glad those boys are okay from your previous post! Also the post about the vintage cards brought back so many memories! :)
ReplyDeleteYes I do know! And I instantly thought of my reading that very magazine last night. Love those little pie birds.
ReplyDeleteBrenda
I think they are adorable, and have only one. And they really work.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing.

I love pie birds - yours are especialy sweet - tweet tweet.
ReplyDeleteI have one given to me several years ago by our son and daughter-in-law. It is a pretty blue-bird shade of blue! :)
ReplyDeleteVery cute pie birds! I love the white and blue one. I don't come across these sweet little birds very often, and when I do, they're not affordable. You're are great!
ReplyDeletePatricia :o)
I have one little pie bird that looks like your bird with the yellow beak!! I think they are charming!
ReplyDeleteOh I love these...I was just reading the same artical in Country Living. I wish I had some...happy baking my friend. oxxo
ReplyDeleteI have never seen these before! What a neat idea:)))
ReplyDeleteI must not be much of a pie-baker...
:))
They are so cute, worthy of collecting.
ReplyDeleteThat's so cool!
ReplyDeleteI sure love your collection, and I too just received my magazine yesterday. I have not found a pie bird yet, but I really should keep my eyes peeled for one. The trees I find at Big Lots also Michaels crafts and I am sure Hobby Lobby (we don't have one here in Ca.) And then when I add the bling I use hot glue, and yes some I will give a spray of Glitter. Hugs, Diane
ReplyDeleteNever heard of this but very clever solution and so cute in the middle of a pie!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI just got my copy in the mail today. Well, I just got my mail today it might have been there yesterday.
ReplyDeleteI remember your post about the pie birds. I had never seen them before, but oh how cute!
I'll have to look around for one, or two or three!
I found a little black one like that that my Granny used in pies :) Catherine x
ReplyDeleteLove those cuties...My grandma used to have one. She made the best pies!
ReplyDeleteOooh, lovely! My mom and I saw that article and commented about one that she has that belonged to my great grandma. It's very old so she doesn't use it. I bought her one last christmas that is made of that rubbery silpat material so that it won't break. She loves it.
ReplyDeleteI remember those! I don't see them very often at the flea markets. But I'll have to look next time I am there.
ReplyDeleteHow cute!! I love those!
ReplyDeleteI read your post about the accident outside your house! YIKES! I am so NOT medically inclined! I pray that if I'm ever in your situation I can be a help and a calming to the victims. That was so sweet of those boys to bring you flowers. Doesn't that remind you that there IS good in the world? You did a very Christian helpful thing and I'm sure they were very grateful!
Bless you!
Oh I LOVE these! Now, you have me wanting to looks for one! Love that fairytale. :-)
ReplyDeleteI love those little birds!
ReplyDeleteIt's great to find something cute AND useful!
M.E.

ReplyDeleteThey are just darling!

Have a great weekend!
I've seen photos of those but never actually found one! How neat is that! It would make a really fun collection! ♥
ReplyDeleteHello, and thanks for stopping by the High Street Cottage and for your nice comment on my candy cone inspired by Swedish Blogs. I adore pie birds, and have two myself sitting on my chippy white hutch, you can see it when you click "my cottage" on my page. My grandmother had several, and very detailed. I love your white with the blue, not seen one like that, and have always been partial to the black magpies (at least I think that's what they are) ;)
ReplyDeleteI have thought of collecting piebirds, but have no place to put them. Love yours.
ReplyDeleteI so want a pie bird! Or two. Or three... Where did you find yours?
ReplyDeleteHow stinkin' cute are these, Gayle?! Each one has a different personality & a totally different look, too.
ReplyDeleteThank you SO much for telling me about yours. I added a link to this in my peach pie post.
Hugs,
Rett
