Dolls From The Land of Make Believe

These sweet little nursery rhyme and fairytale characters are part of my paper doll collection.   The cards were designed by artist Vivian "Viv" Trillow Smith, and published by Hallmark in 1947-48 as "The Land of Make Believe".  Vivian was a very prolific designer and the first Hallmark artist allowed to sign her own work.  (There are 16 cards in the whole collection, but I only own 9 of them.)

I just love all the colorful details, including the sequins and feathers!   The backs are just as ornate as the front.  And each one has a little story printed on the inside.

I have other paper doll greeting cards, but they will have to wait for another day and another post.

Godzilla and Yeti Go To the Art Fair

We went to the Plaza Art Fair this weekend.    We had a great time wandering around  in the drizzling rain,  chatting with the creative geniuses behind the masterpieces, petting everyone's dogs, munching on snacks and enjoying the music.   We love attending this event each fall.

These fun pieces by ceramic artist Doug Spalding spoke to us.

Our son was only 2 years old when he first discovered Godzilla at the toy store.   He pulled the huge, ugly, plastic, lizard thing off the shelf and hauled it around the store with him.  What's a parent to do??  It came home with us and was his favorite toy for many years!   He even slept with that prickly thing in his bed 'til he was about 8.   So,  as you can imagine,  when we saw Doug's Godzilla plate at the art fair, we thought of our son, now away at college.   And that plate had to come home with us.

I have listened to my Dad tell jokes and stories about the elusive Sasquatch (aka Yeti) ever since I was a little girl.  So when we saw the Yeti raku tile, I turned to Mr. Garden and before I could even open my mouth he said  "You have to buy that for your Dad!!"   So it came home with us too, and will be shipped to Washington tomorrow.  I know he will get a kick out of it.

Some of you may remember me posting about our naughty little black kitten and her tree climbing escapades this past spring.   She chased the birds way up into the huge tree and then did not know how to get back down.   MR. Garden had to climb about 3 stories high into the branches and get her out, while I was on the ground holding the way-too-short-ladder, freaking out about him falling and breaking his back!    So when we saw Doug's cat in the tree platter,  my husband and looked at each other and burst out laughing.   It had to come home with us as well.

I'm still not sure how this one artist's work seemed to be such a perfect fit for our quirky family, but it was.

A few more photo's from that evening:

May the Bluebird of Happiness Fly Through Your Door

May the bluebird of happiness fly through your door and never leave.

It seems that a whole bunch of them flew into my house.
Which is fine...
so long as they don't leave any messes.

Quilts From Great-Grandma

My great-grandma was an amazing quilter.  My best memory of her is sitting in a chair, surrounded by bags of colorful fabric, scissors, and paper templates.   She had lots of kids, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  And she made beautiful quilts for all of us.

This darker green nine patch quilt was the first quilt I received from her.  I don't ever remember it not being on my bed, so that means I've had it since before I was 4 years old.  I remember laying on my bed, looking at all the different fabrics and colors.  ( I still do that now.)   Sometimes I played with dolls on the quilt, and each 9-patch block became a different "room", and the sashing became the "hallways" of the "doll house".

This lighter green quilt came along a few years later.   Do any of you quilters recognize this block and know it's name?   I think my great-grandma found some of her quilt template patterns in the newspaper.   I should go to the Kansas City Star Quilts web site  and see if I can locate it.  They published quilt patterns in newspapers all around the country.

Because of her, I grew up loving quilts.   Her specialty was scrap quilts and to this day that is my favorite type of quilt.

I decided to make today's post quilt related in memory of CC.   I was just getting to know her  through the Sunbonnet Sue patterns she posted on her blog.   Rest in peace friend.  My deepest sympathy and prayers go out to her family.

Polly Put The Kettle On, We'll All Have Tea.

I'm getting ready for  tea and story time with my wee friend, Little Miss.  My kids used these Peter Rabbit dishes when they were young too.

Several storybook characters are joining us.  There's Peter Rabbit, Tom Kitten, Nursery Rhyme Polly, Chicken Little and the Steadfast Tin Soldier.

We are too young for real tea.  Just warm milk with sugar this time.

And there will be cookies and fruit to nibble on.

But if I put the milk and food out now, we will have trouble from you know who...

Katerina
and
Natasha

Don't let those innocent eyes fool you!
I'm waiting.
Hope you take time to enjoy the little people in your life.   They grow up so quickly.
