Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy

When I was  about 12 years old I read a wonderful book about four sisters.
There were four girls in my family too, and so
one of America's best loved coming of age tales quickly joined my list of favorites.

Little Women

VIV (Vivian Trillow Smith),  illustrator at Hallmark cards
designed these doll greeting cards when the 1949 version of the movie came out.

Jo

Meg

 Beth

 Amy

And this is a 1963 Saalfield paperdoll version of  Little Women.

Did you have a favorite sister? (from the book.)

(book cover)

Which was your favorite movie version?  1933 with Katherine Hepburn as Jo,
1949 with June Allyson or 1994 with Wynona Rider?

My sisters all live far away,
and this post is making me miss them.

  2. How wonderful it must be to have sisters. You may not believe it but I have the 1960's version of the paper dolls!! I forgot I had then from my childhood. Right now Beth is my favorite because this spring my little cousin was in the musical and played her.

  3. I grew up with the June Allyson version, and loved it, but when the new one came out in the nineties I loved that too. It's so beautifully filmed. I read all the books, and wanted to be Jo of course.

  5. Here is a secret. I think I am the only woman on the planet that has never read Little Women. I have no idea why! It is even more weird because I am a voracious reader. Reading is my vice that gets me through life.

  6. Hello,
I have just one sister in my life and thats more than enough. LOL But the moovie photos look so nice. And hallmark produces cute cards with the sisters. I don't know neither the book nor the moovie. Sounds really like a nice story.
    Best greetings, Johanna

  7. I have just one sister and we're closer now as adults than we were growing up. I hope my two girls continue to remain close their whole lives.

  8. Those Hallmark cards are just the cutest! And the book is the same volume that I own, as is the newest Hollywood rendition of the classic. I love those Little Women...

  10. The version I would have to choose would be the one with my favorite, Katherine Hepburn, I love her movies.

  11. I have three sisters also and we four all live in different towns. My favorite version of the movie was the one with Wynona Ryder and Beth was my favorite character. Mom loves the version with Elizabeth Taylor and said if she'd known in advance she would have four daughters she would have named us after the book characters. Um, that would made me Jo as I'm the second. I think I'm happy with my own name instead.

  12. So sweet.....they are just so adorable!

  13. Jo...I could totally relate. Although I didn't have a sister my best friend growing up was younger and more outgoing. By far the June Allyson version was the favored in my home although Katherine gave it a good go she always felt too harsh for me. I adore these cards and yours are in perfect shape. Far to far out of my budget. Smiles...Renee

  15. The prints are adorable - and I love the book. I have a first edition that I just happened upon at a very old bookstore in N. CA. It is one of my treasures.

  16. I usually watch Little Women over Xmas. I love the version with Elizabeth Taylor; but I was pleasantly surprised with the latest version with Wynona Ryder. So, I try to see both versions; but my leaning would be towards the latest version. My favorite character? Probably Jo; she had spunk!

  18. My sister lives far away too, she is in England and me in the USA. It is sad. I love the old original version. However I would need to watch it again before I pick a favorite! I adore the cards :) what a thrill they are.

  30. I have read "March" by Gerlaidine Brooks also, and agree with BirdieBlue -it is a great read, and from a different perspective of the March family.

  32. I like the latest one with
Wynona Ryder, so homey, I love the house where they live, if only that were my house! I don't have any sisters (or brothers) my sister in law is the nearest I have to a sister as we were best friends at school and I married her youngest brother.

  41. I loved Jo but a close second was Beth. I didn't like either of the two Jo's in the movies as I always had my own version of Jo and how she looked and behaved in my head. I have read all of the books several times over the years and the 'Little Men' series as well.
