Courthouse Steps Quilt

This is another scrap quilt that my great-grandmother made.  As age and arthritis set in, she was no longer able to quilt by hand, so she tied the quilts.  (See other quilts from my great-grandma here.)

Although it has a couple threadbare spots and tears, I still use it on my bed every year when the weather starts to turn cold.

I know you are starting to think that Katarina (my cat) must follow me from room to room and just plop down right in the middle of whatever I am trying to take a picture of.   And you would be correct.  I had to shoo her off the bed to open the quilt up for a better photo. (She jumped right back up on the quilt when I was done.)

The quilt block is a log cabin variation, called Courthouse Steps.

With a name like that I think this quilt should be passed down to my son.   He was recently chosen as the Chief Magistrate for the residence hall governing board,  and has dreams of law school, post graduation.

  18. Good evening,
I just love that quilt...gorgeous and when I look at a quilt I think about the amount of time, stitches, cutting, trimming, and pure effort that must go into creating the masterpiece. I'm always in awe of quilts.
AND I've decided you should turn your beautiful bedroom into a bed and breakfast...It looks so cozy and lovely! I could curl up nice with that quilt. :0)
    Katarina is precious!

  26. I like the scrappy look of that quilt. I still make most of my quilts using leftover bits from dressmaking, and worn and washed clothing. The quilts are full of memories.

  36. My mom gave me a quilt when I got married that is so like the first one that I had to do a double-take.

  37. What beautiful colors! I love that she used orange! It's so warm and cheerful!

I don't see tied quilts often but I have one my grandmother, mom and aunts worked on together when my grandmother was ill with cancer. It's a dresden plate pattern made of my great-grandmothers' dresses. Both of them passed on by the time I was 13 so it's wonderful to have this keepsake.

  53. Thank you for the birthday wishes. I did have a good day...

I will certainly be praying for your son, Gayle. I understand about being away from our kids when they aren't feeling well. Please take care...and let me know from time to time how he's doing.

  54. I would be very happy to pray for your son. I'm so sorry to hear about his accident. It IS so hard when they are away and we can't spoil and take care of them. I know you are hurting and stressed about it but prayers will help and knowing God is really the best "caretaker". Please keep me posted. You're in my thoughts and prayers as well.
My Haley broke 2 fingers last year in Sept. at KSU doing intramural flag football. We had to rush there for surgery the next morning to put pins in. YES....I can sympathize and understand how you are feeling!
    Blessings,
    Tanya
