Picked these up for a song!

I picked up these two embroidered pieces for just a song at a thrift store.  It was my lucky day!

A sweet daisy pillowcase.  And this darling tablecloth with a teapot in one corner and cream and sugar in another.

I have completed two more squares for my little sampler. A teapot and a bluebird.

And yes, you were all correct with your guesses for my last post.   It was a house in a tornado.  Can't be from Kansas without including that in my sampler can I?
Be sure to stop in and see what the other 50+ participants are doing with their samplers at 39 Squares.  Everyone is so creative!

By yesterday afternoon almost all of our snow had melted.  Only a few patches like this remained:

And today's rain made even those disappear.   Once again snow free!   I love rainy days.  I may be the only person on the planet who does, but they make me relax.  I want to curl up on the couch with my kitties and a good book.

Speaking of books, I am supposed to choose the next read for our book club that meets next week.  I'm open for suggestions.   What good books have you read lately?

  2. Those are wonderful embroidered treasures! Your embridered squarea are very sweet and imaginative.

I am reading the novel "Brooklyn" by Colm Toibin. It takes place in Ireland and America in the 1950's -- an immigrant's story. It came highly recommended.

There has also been a lot of buzz about the novel "The Help," but I haven't read that as yet

  4. I love the embroidered pieces you found.
Your sampler is wonderful. I found a book at the thrift store today from 1979 titled Complete Guide to Needlework (for $1.00). It is a Reader's Digest book and has complete instructions for all the embroidery stitches, knitting, crocheting, macrame, rug making...you name it! I have embroidered in the past but I thought this would be a great resource to get me back on the right track with embroidering again. I'll keep you posted on how it goes.

  6. Have always loved embroidered pillow cases. In the spring I pile pillows in embroidered cases on my spare bed just to look at them. Your little squares are turning out so cute. Can't help you much with current novel trends as I tend to read second hand books tht friends pass on to me.

  10. Love the vintage linens, especially the teapot. But, I love your embroidery even more, you are so talented.

Jeanette Wall's newest book, 'Half Broke Horses' (Memoir/fiction), was just as good as 'The Glass Castle'. Other top picks, 'Cutting for Stone', 'Lark & Termite', 'The Forgotten Garden, A Novel', 'Love Walked In', 'Benny & Shrimp', 'Those Who Save Us', 'Sarah's Key', 'The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie' and "The Post Mistress". I would be happy to tell you more about any of these.

I have a bunch of other suggestions, depending on what you like. Does your book club theme the food and drinks to the book?

  16. Great finds! I LOVE rainy days too! Occasionally, that it. Yesterday was a good one. Slow and steady. I was away from home all day, but I like to curl up with a good book on those type of days. As far as a good book, one of my book clubs just read "Olive Kitteridge" by Elizabeth Strout. We talked and talked about it. Lots to discuss. I'm now reading "The Shadow of the Wind" by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. Both book clubs picked it for April, so I got lucky! It sounds really good.
