Raggedy Andy!
This Andy sits on a shelf in my son's room.
A picture of my two little munchkins, playing outside on their tricycles
with their Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy dolls.

When I was a little girl, I had a Raggedy Andy.
I was very attached to him.
This is a sketch my mom made of me when I was young.

I loved that doll to pieces.
Literally.
After years of wear and tear, repeated washings and humid conditions, he wore out.
My Mom stitched him back together, numerous times.
And completely replaced a few limbs.
But eventually the fabric was completely broken down.
I still have this one tiny piece of him
tucked away in a little tin of childhood treasures.
I know he loved me as much as I loved him.

I had a Raggedy Andy too! I loved him more than any other doll I had. I think it is because he loved me too. It said so right where his heart should be. I did petition for an Ann but she never came to be. It was OK because I loved him enough for both of us.

ReplyDeleteI had a Raggedy Andy too...wonder why not a Raggedy Ann? Oh well, yes he was loved but is still in one piece! what a sweet face and got to love the heart......
ReplyDeleteGayle -- what a precious post. Loved the photos and that sketch is priceless! My sister still has her Holly Hobbie (and friends) dolls tucked away in her cedar chest. I was more of a baby doll kind of girl and those were long ago out grown and given away.

I remember having those when I was little - Chatty Kathy was one - was it because we shared the same name? And I was never chatty at all myself!

What great memories. My oldest daughter received a Raggedy Andy when she was very small, but she never took to it. I had a favorite doll named BB. Probably, I couldn't say "baby" and it came out BB. I still have her too. I also had a stuff dog named Bernie. One time my parents and I were out shopping and I apparently saw a little girl with the same dog, and mine was at home, and I started screaming that she had my BERNIE!!!!

I can't really remember ever having an attachment to any particular doll, as a youngster. I'll have to ask my mother about it.
I have always wanted a Raggedy Andy doll, my Mom has one though. Gayle your mother did a fantastic job with her sketch.

I Had a Raggedy Ann - who I called just 'Raggedy' as my nickname was Annie. Loved her threadbare, too she may be in a box somewhere around the house, but I think she's long gone.

What a wonderful post. I didn't have a Raggedy Ann or Andy - but I did have a rag doll that my grandma made for me for my 6th birthday. She still lives with me - and has her very own rocking chair. She is about the size of a two year old, and has long brown braids.
ReplyDeleteShe has had to have her arms and legs replaced and has had two sets of braids. My kids played with her - and she's still my favorite doll.
It is wonderful that you have a remnant of your Andy doll.

ReplyDeleteO my...Raggedy Andy..some where I had Raggedy Ann...least you still have a piece of him..thats nice..Mom drew a great picture. I also one year was broke and make my daughter and son Raggedy Andy and Raggedy Ann..somewhere I have the photo I will have to show you..I remember making the hair with cardboard and orange yarn...Happy Saturday my friend. ReplyDeletewhat a lovely post I think you should frame your portrait and what left of your beloved doll...your girls are adorable....they do grow to quickly thank God for pictures so we can look back when parenting was easy.
ReplyDeleteHad a knitted doll my mother made for me, still have her, very floppy and rather grubby. Afraid that if I wash her she will disintegrate. "Pippi" after Astrid Lindgrens character. Lot of love gone into that doll :)

ReplyDeleteI love that all you have left is a small piece. That is about what I have left of my baby (toddler,tween, teen, young adult) blanket. I had both Raggedy Ann and Andy. I loved them but my heart belonged to a soft bodied baby I called Gracie, she is still with me and I find her crazy hair and sticky eye still charming.

What a sweet post. I have a teddy bear that was well loved. He was sewn up many many times. He's now in my craft room on a top shelf and he doesn't look all that handsome anymore. Thanks for the memories.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter was the lucky recipient of an original Raggedy Anne and someone made her a gorgeous one as well. They sat high on a shelf in her nursery so as not to get destroyed by the brothers...Now they rest peacefully in the den tucked into a rocker...I had and still have a sweet little nanny goat I treasured. Oh, what a sweet post. I love that picture of your kids and their dolls and the sketch your mom did ... precious! But, I really had to smile at the piece of Andy you have saved. That is so sweet.
ReplyDeleteRaggedy Ann was my favorite doll growing up. I always wanted the great big one and Andy too. Through the years I got some of the smaller ones. When I got married my husband bought me the great big ones for Christmas. I still have them all in the attic. Maybe I will dig them out and do a post.
