K Is For Konza Prairie

K is for Konza Prairie located in the Flint Hills region of Kansas.   The 13 square miles of native tall grass prairie are jointly owned by the Nature Conservancy and Kansas State University and operated as a field research station.  A small herd of buffalo call Konza Prairie home.    Six miles of nature trails bring in hikers and the environmental education program makes it a popular place for school field trips.

    I love to drive across I-70 through Kansas. I drive to see my son and family in Columbia, Missouri. I love the sunflowers and the hardwood trees in fall in Eastern Kansas. I enjoy those windmills too!

    O my, this is really special to see, thanks for sharing! We don't know this landscape at all in our flat country ... I would love to stand on a hill and watch it there. Wonderful!

    How beautiful! What is beautiful about the prairie is that you can see so far. I love that..the feeling of time and space..
    I remember many years ago when we took our children for a trip across the United States and when we went through Texas we stopped by the side of the road and turned all 6 loose. They ran and tumbled and yelled and went nuts. It was wonderful! I always wished I could have raised them in the wide open country instead of with little back yards...sidewalks, cars flying by...you know?

    I love the Kanza prairie. It's my favorite drive in Kansas especially once the hills turn bright green! Happy Easter!

    Flint Hills, huh? Isn't Manhattan in the Flint Hills? Our KMCO did grad school at KSU but we didn't get to visit them much there and never really got outside Manhattan. Looks beautiful and indeed a great outing.

    We love the Flint Hills--they are soo peaceful and quiet. When standing out in the hills you are really one with nature.
    Everywhere you look it just seems to go on and on. Each season is sooo different in the hills.
    BEAUTIFUL!!!!!

    How lovely. I used to own this obscure book called "Off the Beaten Path".

    I think someone in my family burned it because I was forever dragging my kids on vacations to see some wonder or another.

    One very, very long trip we drove to see a prairie. One of the only remaining pristine prairies left in America.

    So we got there after driving like five hours out of the way and my husband at the time said "ummm....OK, it is a field that needs brush-hogged. Wow..."

    Your post made me remember that.

    I'm glad your family was more appreciative!
